What is The Love and Kindness Initiative?
Dear Reverend/Rabbi/Father/Imam Khatib/Spiritual Leader,
My cousin was one of the eleven people killed in the Tree of Life shootings in Pittsburgh on 27 October 2018. His grandmother and my grandfather were sister and brother.
I grew up in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh. I had my wedding rehearsal in the Tree of Life chapel; the rabbi at the time conducted my wedding ceremony. When I was a child, I took piano lessons from a teacher who lived a block from Tree of Life.
This event happened in my neighborhood, this event took my cousin’s life and the lives of ten other wonderful people, and this event stunned the beating heart of the world.
In this defining moment, I have a positive message to share with you and your Unity congregation, if you’d be open to my presenting a program on The Love and Kindness Initiative.
I am living proof that the miracle of love can change the world. When my dog was diagnosed with terminal splenic cancer that wrapped around her liver and at least one kidney in 2013, I developed and implemented a love and prayer-based emotional support program (no traditional cancer therapies were used). Within a month, she was cancer-free and she stayed cancer-free. We had two more mostly healthy and definitely happy years together before she passed from congestive heart failure and a fatty liver at age 16. You can read Laila’s story on my website, www.TransformingThroughLove.com.
When I heard about my cousin, I knew how important it was for me to become the emissary of love I came here to be. I feel love is the perfect antidote to the poison of fear and hatred, so I began contacting the people who live in my heart to tell them I love them and to thank them for being in my life.
I left phone messages, text messages, and Facebook messages. I walked door to door in my community to thank the people who live in my heart. I reached out to people I haven’t contacted in years, and I reached out to people I don’t know but who post loving and positive things on Facebook.
I didn’t plan any of this. It grew organically into what I am now calling The Love and Kindness Initiative.
Each time I say “I love you,” the pink bubble of love that seemingly magically appears to comfort grievers grows a little larger for me. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
I expanded my message to thank strangers for their kindness. When someone smiles at me, I tell them about Dick and thank them for bringing their beautiful smile to the world. People cry, people hug me, people’s eyes soften, and people go into their hearts. Whether or not they know it, they’re joining me in The Love and Kindness Initiative. It’s gorgeous. I have done this with restaurant managers, people at the deli counter, cashiers at Wegmans, and everyone else I meet.
I just did this with the nice man who works at the AT&T store. It turns out that he and I share a history of experiencing life-changing strokes; thanks to my thanking him for being nice to me and explaining what happened to my cousin, we experienced a lovely heart connection during our time together. I looked into his eyes before I left, and I saw we both felt better for it.
A friend who lives in California told me I’d inspired her to smile at a stranger. They fell into easy conversation, and she’s now looking forward to seeing the stranger the next time they both attend religious services.
All of this is my way of transforming my part of the world through love. All of this is my part of The Love and Kindness Initiative.
I can do a lot on my own, but I want many, many others to join me in The Love and Kindness. Would you be interested in my presenting a program in which I can share stories and inspire others to do their own versions of what I am doing? If so, please reach out to me through the contact form on my website.
My cousin’s life was filled with good works. I am carrying his mission forward by doing something I hope you and your people will support.
Let’s do this together.
Love and Blessings to you and yours,
Sheryl Hirsch-Kramer
