Honor Us: The Times They Are A-Changing
Honor us first, love us next? Bring it on!
I attended a webinar today that was presented by an authority in his niche.
I’ve been teaching for over forty years and have adopted a philosophy of honoring the student, first and foremost. I stay away from teachers who don’t honor the student. For that matter, I stay away from people who don’t honor me. I’m Transforming Through Love; to me, honor is a necessary part of love.
The presenter described his approach as coaching that is “a little tougher than usual.” He told us to be “grownups,” that we should be able to figure out by ourselves the technical computer things that we faced while trying our best to listen to him. And he spoke really, really fast, meaning that comprehension and note taking was much more challenging than it needed to be. He didn’t slow down; instead, he gave us a link to the slides and told us to watch the presentation again if we couldn’t keep up with him.
I don’t remember anybody’s having offering critique in chat during the webinar he’d presented last year. I remember logging out as soon as I realized he and I were on different wavelengths. A large percentage of this crowd made it clear that his approach wasn’t working for them.
Some people in chat called him “condescending.” Others advised him to lay off the coffee. I shared that I didn’t have a problem with him talking fast but I did have a problem with his disrespect for his audience.
I checked his Twitter account later in the day; he’d tweeted that he’d been “hammered” for his fast talking, which he said had never happened during any of the multitude of seminars he’d presented. Instead of taking responsibility for how he’d presented and instead of taking notes from our critique, he called us out.
I loved seeing a healthy portion of the international audience speak up. It’s so great to see people saying no to being disrespected. Even if it doesn’t always look like it, “the times they are a-changing.”
Transforming through love? Demanding to be honored is a really good start.
